Bowen Therapy Aids Gut Health

The Gut or Gastrointestinal Tract (GI)

This vital body system has the important job of breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, keeping out toxins and producing nutrients. For optimal immunity, cell function, detoxification and nourishment, it is essential that your gut functions seamlessly.

An imbalance of the digestive system can cause more than just bloating, stomach cramps, heartburn, acid re-flux, feelings of fullness, loss of appetite and irregular bowel movements. As 80% of our immune system is in our gut, it is no surprise that gut imbalances have been linked to many other health conditions including allergies, fibromyalgia, eczema, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, anxiety, IBS, hormonal imbalances, chronic fatigue and other chronic health issues.

How Bowen Can Help

Bowen therapy works on the fascia. This is the white collagen membrane that surrounds individual muscles, muscle bundles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. It binds these structures together in much the same manner that plastic wrap is used to hold the contents of your bread roll together. Fascia consists of several extremely thin layers, and is the tissue where the musculoskeletal system, circulatory system, and nervous system all converge. It extends from the top of the head to the tip of the toes. Healthy fasciae are flexible tissues that are able to resist great tensile forces.

The fascia not only surrounds the musculoskeletal, circulatory and nervous systems but also winds around the organs in the abdominal cavity, the organs in the chest cavity, and the membranes that surround the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. In other words, fascia is everywhere!

Bowen Therapy enhances fascial health by using a series of selectively placed moves mostly located over acupuncture/acupressure points. The push and pull of the moves create a ripple of movement through the fascia, stimulating movement and re-hydration in tiny molecular structures (glycoproteins) in the matrix of the fascia. Adhesion's of collagen fibres are released which in turn assists other tissues of the body such as organs, nerves, muscles, blood vessels and lymph to function more effectively.

The objective when working to improve gut health with Bowen therapy is to release the fascia surrounding the organs and alter the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic mode, namely, eating, digesting and eliminating.

One client with chronic (10 years) Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) who participated in a 6-week study on the efficiency of Bowen Therapy on IBS stated after the 6 week period;

“I noticed a considerable difference in the amount and extent of bloating I would normally experience each day. I also had little to no abdominal pain, whereas when I started my daily pain level was at a 6. I had more energy, being able to return to the gym, which I hadn’t been able to do before.”

“I felt extremely relaxed doing the sessions. I think I like that aspect the most. It was very calming. I was very fascinated with Bowen and the techniques used to improve IBS.”

“Yes, it is definitely a treatment I would like to keep using to help my IBS.”
